Why Use MSM for Dogs and Cats?

Directions for Use

MSM is a naturally occurring, bioavailable sulfur compound. Sulfur is an indispensable nutrient and should be taken daily for optimal health and nutrition.

For dogs and cats we recommend mixing 500 mg MSM powder per 10 lbs of body weight in your pet's food daily.

For horses we recommended feeding one tablespoon (approx. 12 grams) MSM powder twice daily for the first 7 days. Feed one heaping tablespoon thereafter for daily maintenance.

Veterinary interest in MSM has increased over recent years. However, MSM has been used on horses for nearly 20 years. In 1983 John Metcalf, DVM, a well-known equine practitioner, started his evaluation of MSM to treat a variety of illnesses in horses, including chronic muscle soreness, epiphysitis, acute laminitis, pleuritis, recurring digestive tract disorder and arthritis. He has published his positive findings in several studies in peer-reviewed scientific periodicals, and generally emphasizes that MSM is of great value in maintaining the general health of horses.

MSM is now widely acclaimed by veterinarians and horsemen for its contribution to equine health care. Research has shown MSM's importance as a dietary source of sulfur.

MSM is an organic substance and is found in all living organisms. Generally, it is found in relatively small amounts in most feedstuffs. However, it is not an inherently stable form of sulfur. The purified, patented MSM is a white, crystalline powder that can be easily incorporated into your supplement program. What about "other" sources of MSM?

Yes, you can find other sources of methylsulfonylmethane. Non-licensed methylsulfonylmethane is often imported from mainland China and/or other Pacific Rim countries and can be purchased in bulk through various importers. The price, the purity and the quality of this material varies greatly.

Much of this imported material is manufactured using a relatively low cost evaporation process. With an evaporation based manufacturing process, contaminants found in the water used for production may end up in your MSM product. HorseTech's OptiMSM® is made with a unique distillation process where contaminants are "distilled" away from the final product. You'll note that the distilled product is a fine white powder, whereas the evaporated product will generally be a larger, less consistent "flake" material.

Further, each and every batch of OptiMSM® is tested right here in the U.S. for heavy metal contaminants AND microbiological contaminants. This is an important part of the quality assurance program!

Recommended Usage

Provide to full sized horses (1,000 to 1,200 lbs) at the rate of 10 grams (one level scoop) per horse, per day. An initial usage rate of 20 grams per day (10 grams twice daily) may be utilized for the first seven days. The enclosed 11cc scoop will hold approximately 10 grams. Usage rate may be reduced proportionately, by weight, for smaller horses, lighter breeds, etc.
