Put most simply, detoxing involves giving your body a break from anything toxic, so that the body can work these toxins out of your system.  The outcome of a successful and well-planned detox is that you will be likely to experience

So Why is Detoxing Necessary?

The body is constantly in a flux of detoxing, however due to the modern diet known as the SAD (Standard American Diet), our heightened daily stresses, the toxic chemicals we ingest daily, and the increase in chronic degenerative diseases the body often needs a helping hand and to be cleansed so that it can work more effectively to eradicate these toxins from the body and be stronger to resist diseases.

Why Do So Many People Detox to Lose Weight?

Although it may seem strange - fat is actually saving your life!  The body retains fats as a way to protect the vital organs in the body from the toxins and acidic pH foods that we ingest (and create through stress).  It is literally a last resort, life saving action for the body to hang on to fat.  However, this should give you some indication as to how harmful these toxins must be as to retain fat as a defence mechanism the body must be fairly desperate - as we all know - excess fat leads to a whole host of other degenerative conditions and diseases!

So when we detox and cleanse the body of toxins, we give the body a chance to repair and strengthen itself - and when the toxins disappear, guess what happens to the protective layer of fat...yes, that disappears too! 

What Does a Detox Do?

A cleanse or detox helps to strengthen the organs that the body uses to flush toxins from the body on a daily basis. These include the skin, the lymphatic system, the intestines, liver, lungs, and kidneys.

These toxins could invade the body from a variety of sources including the environment, foods, drinks, stressful lifestyle (for instance alcohol, tobacco, pesticides, heavy metals, food additives, oral contraceptives, and drugs). 

Detoxing works because it gives your body a break from the toxic excesses that modern life creates. By removing the body's necessity to burn energy digesting heavy, sugar and fat-laden meals and snacks that are difficult to digest and metabolise, and which play havoc with blood sugar, your energy is released to cleanse and regenerate your bodies tissues and vital organs.
 

Will I Need to Starve Myself?

A common misconception is that detoxing or cleansing the body involves restricting your food and basically starving yourself for days on end.  Not a very appealing thought, and you can understand why the people who attempt this ill-fated approach often fail and then renounce their new-found drive for a healthy lifestyle! 

A perfect example of a slightly crazy, and most definitely idiotic detox is the 'Lemonade Diet' popularised in the 1990's and somehow still being attempted across America today!  This diet involves consuming nothing but homemade lemonade (containing maple syrup!) for anything up to 14 days and beyond, with the mantra - if you feel hungry, just have another glass of lemonade!  I'm sure I do not have to explain the dozen flaws in this plan - but let me assure you, a proper detox is about abundance, not starvation. 

To give your body the tools it needs to detoxify, cleanse and regenerate a detox must give the body even more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than normal.  This is often achieved through consuming fresh juices, soups and occasional supplements.  A bottle of lemonade simply doesn't cut it I am afraid!

What If I Have a Bad Day?

The most important thing to remember is that if you have a bad day it is not the end of the world and it should certainly not spell the end of your detox.  You should use this opportunity to think about what went wrong, why you made the decision to move away from your goal and use this as an opportunity to understand how you will respond next time.  Worrying about it will do no good - so don't beat yourself up, see it as a positive step towards improving your health.

 

 What About Temptations?

There will always be temptation!  The best way to combat this is to address it before it becomes a problem and two excellent techniques for doing this is to set measurable and achievable goals and to create a list of all of the benefits you will gain from following through with your detox and all of the things you stand to lose if you do not follow through.  

This list can then be copied and placed strategically around the home, office and even your car!  It is also a good idea to run through the list and carefully consider each point when you wake up (to set yourself up for the day) and before you go to bed (to reward yourself and give yourself a pat on the back!).

The list can include anything you like, and can be spread over time - for instance, what will life be like in 1, 5, 10, 20 years if you follow through with the detox and start a new healthy lifestyle?  If you achieved your health goals, how would this affect you?  And if you did not achieve them, what would your life be like then?

The list could look something like this:
If I Achieve My Health Goals:
- I will have loads more energy to achieve the things I want in life
- I will be able to spend more time playing with the kids
- I will be able to get up earlier and go running, swimming etc
- I will have energy all through the day
- I will have the body of my dreams
- I will be able to attract the man/woman of my dreams
- I will be able to wear a swimsuit/swimmers this summer!
- My confidence will be through the roof
- I can buy that dress/suit/shirt I have always wanted
- I can start wearing shorts/a skirt!

If I do not follow through on my commitment to achieve my health goals:
- I will be so fat/thin for the rest of my life
- I will have no energy
- My skin will be blotchy
- I will be bloated and heavy
- I will have no mental clarity
- I will still find it difficult to get up in the morning
- I will still be too embarrassed to wear x, y, z

These are only very basic examples to give you an idea - you should really try to be as detailed as possible and as emotionally charged as possible for yourself - throw yourself into it and you will be surprised on how much of a motivating effect it can have.  Be graphic, aim high with your expectations!

Of course - another great way to avoid temptation is to remove it!  Clear your cupboards of ANY unhealthy foods...and enjoy it!  This is a great way to embrace your new lifestyle!

'My Head Hurts!'  Is This Normal?

When detoxing people often experience what is known as 'detox flu' or 'detox crisis'.  As your body is systematically cleansing itself of toxins and pollution, this is the period during the detox that these toxins are being eliminated from the body.  Different people experience different symptoms, but commonly they can include headaches, nausea, cold-like symptoms (blocked nose, shivers etc), spots and pimples etc.  Different people also experience these symptoms in varying degrees of severity, with some people not experiencing them at all!  Fear not though, as these feelings are never more than uncomfortable and they rarely impact too much upon your normal daily routine.  The symptoms also usually occur between days 2-4, so it can be planned that these days fall over a weekend, or even better a long weekend/holiday.

The best medicine is to drink lots of fluids to help speed up the toxin flushing process, especially vegetable juices or 'green drinks'.  Have lots of rest and try to relax - but remember, try to steer clear of pharmaceutical medicines as these may end up putting more toxins back into your body.

From the impressive (such as the pH Miracle cleanse which we recommend) to the ridiculous (the Lemonade Detox) there is a wealth of information available on how to detox and which detox is best.

As ever, and with every health choice, it is absolutely vital that you make up your own mind – rather than be prescribed a solution by any one particular source.  
 

Detox Plan Basics

Our advice is always to review all of the information that you can find with an open mind and pick and chose what makes sense to you.

Therefore, the aim of this resource is to give you our unbiased opinion on the three detox plans that we consider to be the most trustworthy and that we have actually undertaken ourselves. There is so much information available (much of it conflicting) that we wanted to put it all together in one place and make it accessible and easy to understand. Some of these detox plans could be perceived as being more difficult than others, but you will all be starting from different places and have different goals in mind and so feel free to take from this what works for you.

 

 The Alkaline Diet 'Cleanse' Detox

The alkaline diet is based on the premise that all illness and disease is caused by the over-acidification of the body through the consumption of acidifying foods such as meat, dairy, saturated and trans-fats, refined foods, sugars, sweets, chocolates, coffee, alcohol, tobacco etc. The solution to this, naturally, is to increase the intake of alkaline foods such as fresh vegetables, salads and greens, low-sugar fruits, ‘good’ fats, nuts, seeds, pulses, fresh juices etc. 

The fact that these foods fall so neatly into these categories certainly adds a lot of weight behind this approach. This approach also follows such common sense that it is difficult to dismiss. It is simply telling you what your mother always told you – eat your vegetables and steer clear of the sweets, fatty foods and dairy. 

Proposed and developed by the likes of Dr. Young, Tony Robbins and Christopher Vasey, it is advised that this health approach is kicked off with a ‘cleanse’.

  

The Basics

The cleanse is also known as a liquid feast which should give some indication as to what the detox entails. Cleansing basically consists of consuming only raw, alkalising, liquid foods and drinks. While on face value you may have alarm bells ringing at the thought of not consuming solids during the detox – there is some pretty strong logic behind this.

The consumption on a cleanse is 100% fresh vegetable juices and soups with additional supplements such as omega oils, vitamins, green drinks (made up of powdered grasses such as wheatgrass), cleansing aids and minerals.

 

 How is it done?

Cleansing is not a complicated process, however there are a number of simple rules that should be adhered to in order to maximise its effectiveness.

 

 Water

It is absolutely essential during the cleanse that you consume at least four litres of high quality, alkalizing water each day. The toxins that the body is trying to expel will attempt to leave the body in a number of different ways, including through producing increase mucus, through the skin (spots) and through the waste we produce. By remaining fully hydrated and alkalised the body is given the opportunity to rapidly flush out toxins ensuring that ‘detox symptoms’ are minimised while refreshing your body with the fluids it needs on a daily basis.

 

Liquid Feasting

During the cleanse the most important thing to remember is that this is not a fast! The cleanse is quite the opposite as it is designed to feed your body with all of the nutrients that will aid repair and give the body the energy and replenishment it needs during the cleansing process. The quickest and most efficient way to alkalise and deliver nutrients to the body is through liquids as this is a form that allows the absorption of nutrients most effectively ensuring minimal waste. Raw soups, vegetable juices, green drinks are all highly alkalizing and vital to the cleanse.

 

Supplements and Essential Fatty Acids

Although it is not absolutely essential to use supplements during a cleanse, it is highly recommended. The two most beneficial supplements during the cleanse are the Supergreens powder (or capsules) and the Alkaline Prime pH drops . 'You Are What You Eat' Detox - The Basics

The basics of a detox following include the following principles:
1. Eat as much as you like, as long as they are the right foods prepared in the right way;
2. Do not focus upon your weight - if you follow the plan the weight loss will be an added bonus to all of the other benefits;
3. Do not see this as a once off - see it as the start of a new lifestyle;
4. Try to be creative in the kitchen and passionate about food;
5. You must embrace the change;
6. Be in touch with your emotions.

  

Essential Guidelines

1. Empty your house of temptation!  You have to consider that getting rid of all of the junk foods in your house is your first step towards a new, healthy life.  Rid your cupboards of fatty foods, sugary foods, refined/processed foods, sweets, junk, foods laden with chemicals and saturated/hydrogenated fats.
2. Keep your kitchen tidy and organised! Without an organised and tidy kitchen it is going to be much harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Cooking meals from scratch is essential to detoxing - but this is far less likely to happen if the kitchen is a disorganised mess!
3. Shop in the right frame of mind! Do not shop when you are hungry as you will be far more likely to succumb to sugary treats and snacks.  Go to the supermarket in the frame of mind that you want to buy fresh, revitalising, life giving fuel for your body and remind yourself of why you are being healthy before, during and after your shop!
4. Change the way you think about snacks! Do not think of snacks as sugary sweets, biscuits and crisps (which play havoc with your blood sugar).  Rather, think of snacks as fresh and delicious energy boosters.  Think of carrot sticks, celery, salads, soups, fresh juices, fruits etc. 
5. Make the most of your fridge and freezer! Nobody wants to spend their life in the kitchen - so make sure you plan properly and use your fridge and freezer to their best capacity!  Make a batch of soup or a giant salad to last today AND tomorrow, freeze your herbs, freeze your meals to have later in the week etc. Fresh is important, so think of your freezer as a natural preservative!
6. Make sure you have the right kit!  Without the right kit you are going to restrict what you can prepare, and even worse preparation of meals can become a drag.  We recommend having at least the following:

- baking trays
- a large casserole dish
- a measuring jug
- a metal grater
- a peeler
- a plastic chopping board for fish
- scales
- a set of saucepans
- a set of good knives
- a thick wooden chopping board
- a wok
- wooden spoons
- a food processor
- a blender
- a juicer


7. Do not fear health food shops!  These will be vital to get hold of some of the ingredients that are recommended. 

Foods to Avoid

The following foods should be strictly avoided while detoxing:

- all artificial sweeteners
- sweets

- chocolate
- ice-cream
- biscuits
- fatty foods (saturated, hydrogenated etc)
- refined 'ready' meals
- microwave meals
- fizzy drinks
- cordials
- shop-bought fruit juice
- meat (aside from occasional fish, chicken or turkey and preferably organic)
- dairy produce
- tobacco
- alcohol
- coffee
- tea (apart from herbal and green tea)
- breads
- processed carbohydrates (including white pasta and white rice)

 

Hints, Tips and Suggestions

Omega Oils are literally 'essential'!  Make sure you get an adequate intake of omega 3 in the correct balance to omega 6 by including flax seeds/flax seed oil, hemp seeds/hemp seed oil or an oil blend in your diet.  A correct intake of the essential fatty acids (omega 3 & 6) will do wonders for your skin, hair, energy, weight and mood.

Hydration - you should aim to consume at least 2-3 litres of good quality water each day.  A great way to start every day is to drink a glass of warm water with lemon or lime juice squeezed in - it invigorates the body, freshens you up and is a great alkaline way to start the morning.

Aim for Raw - try to keep as much of your diet as raw as possible.  Think of salads, raw veggies and homemade hummous, fresh vegetable or fruit juice, lightly steamed broccoli (yes, still raw - raw doesn't mean cold, it just means not overcooked!).  Raw foods still contain all of the important digestive enzymes (essential on a detox) and all of the nutrients that cooking the food normally removes.  Your body will thank you with increased energy levels!

Herbal Teas - can be really important as they are both cleansing and comforting.  Stick to caffeine free varieties and look for ingredients such as ginger, mint, nettle, dandelion, lemon and pau d'arco.
A Typical Day

UPON WAKING
Drink one cup of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice.
FOR BREAKFAST
A freshly prepared juice - such as a green vegetable juice, or a fruit smoothie such as mango, banana and blueberry or fruit juice such as apple, pear and strawberry.
FOR LUNCH
Raw soup or beetroot soup, spinach soup or a miso soup with a mung bean casserole.
FOR DINNER
Baked salmon with steamed vegetables or lettuce and cashew nut wraps.
SNACKS
Blueberries, rice cakes, almonds, carrot sticks, celery sticks, grapes etc

TO DRINK
Herbal tea, vegetable juice, pure water with lemon/lime or Supergreens.

Wormwood -Wormwood (Artemesia annua) has been a favorite among many holy medicinal practitioners for intestinal worms and to cleanse the bowels. Garlic can be taken as a pill or as raw garlic cloves. In a same way, the herb goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) has been prescribed for treating various parasite infestations in many of the ancient medicinal systems in many countries. Goldenseal also helps treating infections present in the mucous membranes that line internal organs and tracts like respiratory and elementary. The herb is found effective against Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia and Plasmodium. 

Eating pineapples can also be a great way to cleanse the bowels naturally since they contain the digestive enzyme bromelain, very useful ingredient to terminate tapeworms. Other foods such as carrots, radish and squash contain large amounts of beta-carotene, a precursor for vitamin A which increases the resistance of the cells against the penetration of larvae.

Turmeric is another valuable herb that cleanses the intestines naturally. Turmeric is a natural healer and also an anthelmintic that expels parasites from the body. One can use dried powder of turmeric or can go for raw rhizomes. A rhizome is a horizontal stem of a plant that is usually found underground, often sending out roots and shoots from its nodes. Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt)
Magnesium sulfate or Epsom salt can also be used for detoxing the liver and bowel of dietary and metabolic acids. Take 1 to 2 tablespoons of magnesium sulfate in 1 liter of 9.5 alkaline water and drink the entire solution within 5 to 10 minutes.  This solution should be ingested, first thing upon rising.  The detoxing of the bowel and liver generally takes place within 60 minutes after ingestion, so make sure you are close to a bathroom.

How to Detoxify

Even though the body has one proven mechanism for dumping environmental toxins, many folks can't sweat. Environmental chemicals have so damaged the autonomic nervous system that it's like having a broken thermostat. For others, they feel dreadfully ill if they try to sweat. After driving the tractor to spray chemicals on hundreds of acres of upstate New York cornfields, I was one of those folks who never sweat. For those who do sweat, high heat causes the mobilization into the bloodstream of nasty chemicals from "safe" storage in fat, heightening symptoms. As well, loss of precious nutrients along with the chemicals can precipitate serious medical problems.
